GLAAD Spirit Day

Supporting LGBTQIA+ Youth

"LGBTQ youth disproportionately face bullying and harassment because of their identities. Each year, millions go purple for Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying. Pledging to 'go purple' on Spirit Day is a way for everyone... to visibly show solidarity with youth and to take part in the largest, most visible LGBTQ anti-bullying campaign in the world." - GLAAD

The GLAAD Spirit Day was held in 2021 on 21 October. The 2022 date hasn't released yet, but includes a number of resources and materials for educators across fields. GLAAD provides a full resource kit in both English and Spanish and provides more resources for parents, educators, and students. They also provide graphics, statistics, and evnen a social media frame for your profile picture. There is also a pledge for people to sign showing their support of LGBTQ youth. 

When considering if this day is right for you, GLADD provides the following information:

  1. 70.1% of LGBTQ students report verbal harrassment.
  2. 71% of LGBTQ students report hearing homophobic remarks from their teachers and school staff.
  3. 53.3% of LGBTQ students do not report bullying because they doubt the support they'd receive.
  4. 48.7% of LGBTQ students experience cyberbullying.
  5. 29% of LGBTQ youth experience homelessness.
  6. 86% of LGBTQ youth remark that recent politics have negatively impacted their wellbeing.
  7. LGBTQ youth of colour report even higher statistics in a number of areas
